Energy industry in 2021 – Heading for a green recovery

Milutin Đukanović, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Elektroprivreda Crne Gore and Nikola Rovčanin, the Chief Executive Officer, participated at XXXVI international conference held in Zlatibor from June 22 to 25, 2021, called ENERGY 2021 - TOWARDS A GREEN RECOVERY. The conference was organized by the Association of Energy Sector Specialists, with patronage of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia.

Renewable energy sources (sun, wind, water, biomass, biogas, geothermal energy, …) were talked about at the conference, as well as the traditional energetics facing energy transition, connection of electric-power industry with heating, transportation and industrial sectors, electric-power networks and energy markets, multi-sectoral tasks in the area of environmental improvement on the path to the EU as well as economic and regulatory-development issues related to energy industry.

After the ceremonial opening, Milutin Đukanović, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of our Company, addressed the audience and reminded it of EPCG’s devotion to further developing implementation of the projects in the area of renewable energy sources, i.e. development of the so-called green energy. Therefore, Mr Đukanović once again announced the construction of HPP ‘Komarnica’, the construction of ‘Gvozd’ wind farm on the Krnovo plateau, the municipality of Nikšić, and ‘Briska Gora’ solar power plant above Bar, in addition to many other projects that are intensely implemented by EPCG expert teams.

‘Our investment ambitions are clear - clean energy, healthy environment’, said Mr Đukanović.

When it comes to the themes discussed, the utmost attention was paid to the strategic planning in terms of energy transition, the analysis of the current operating indicators in the energy industry taking into account the COVID-19 pandemics, new possibilities for financing the energy transition considering the particularities of energy regulations, modern electricity systems and SMART technologies, modern technologies in use of coal, oil and gas for the production of thermal and electrical energy, analysis of the relation between the energy system and environmental protection policy, energy efficiency as well as the optimal energy development, environmental, economic and social effects of the use of renewable energy sources, sustainable development of the energy industry from the standpoint of reducing the climate effects and software tools used to increase the speed and quality of designing, construction, use, energy efficiency of energy and processing equipment and plants. The conference participant also discussed the modern scientific research, technical-technological solutions and innovations in the energy industry, modern control systems and automatic governing in energy and processing technique, academic projects of students, as well as promotional – marketing presentations and expositions on energy-related achievements in the energy economy, industry, agriculture, utility systems, transportation, building design and construction, renewable and new energy sources.

On the conference margin, Mr Đukanović and Mr Rovčanin had several fruitful meetings with distinguished professors, renowned experts and representatives of the energy industry in the region. The Chief Executive Officer Nikola Rovčanin informed the collocutors about the projects of our company, particularly those related to TPP Pljevlja, district heating system of that town and construction of the floating solar panels.

The general impression is that the region, Montenegro included, is currently undergoing an extremely significant process of energy transition largely grounded on the European Green Deal presented on 11th of December 2019. According to the mentioned strategy of the European Commission, the said transition aims to transform Europe into a just and prosperous society with modern, from the standpoint of resources efficient, and competitive economy. Should everything develop according as planned, up until 2050, there will be no net GHG emissions and economic growth will not be tied to unconscientious exploitation of resources.
